For my best friend’s wedding, we traveled to Belize. It was an exotic destination wedding at the time because most people that we knew had never been there. This was 2007.
Our journey to Ambergis Caye was just that – a journey! We flew to San Pedro, then transferred to a van that took us to a prop plane which flew us to another small island where we caught a boat that finally got us to our destination.
We didn’t know that traveling to Belize was going to be quite the adventure. I can’t tell you how happy I am that I didn’t have my kids in tow because I would’ve been totally blind-sighted and totally unprepared. It was a sound lesson in the usefulness of travel agents, although in this situation, we had one but they were negligent in all the details of our trip.
Thinking back on it all, Ambergis Caye was pretty remote considering how we had to travel to get to its shores. I’d say that even if you do work with a travel agent to make arrangements for a not-so-well-known destination, do your own bit of research as well. The internet today is so much more advanced than it was six years ago and there’s a library of travel blogs out there to help answer your questions or guide you along the way.
I’m glad that I didn’t know what to expect – those were the spontaneous and unexpected days of travel. Now with information overload, there are less surprises. We enjoyed our short stay in Belize and Ambergis Caye. We read nothing up on our destination before we went and we didn’t feel the least bit deprived by that once we got back.
